Medical Cannabis in Thailand

The Thai government seems all set to realise the economic potential of the cannabis. According to one estimate, Asia’s medical cannabis market is going to swell to US $5.8 billion by 2024.

Cannabis Clinics & Hospitals in Thailand

By November 2020, 14,236 patients were receiving medical cannabis, representing an increase in accessibility

Since Thailand launched its first cannabis clinic in August 2019, the Public Health Ministry has opened over 500 more nationwide.

 

They can be found in public hospitals in every province including 60% of public hospitals in 878 districts and several tambon or subdistrict healthcare centres. The facilities are overseen by the Ministry’s Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine.

Government Approval on Medical Cannabis

Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, the Minister of Public Health was pleased with how Thai people have embraced cannabis and has again stated his mission to make cannabis both a cash crop, as well as a medicine, for the nation.

Cannabis as Essential Medicines

FDA adds Cannabis to the National List of Essential Medicines, which is to provide medical cannabis to those in need, as well as further develop research into the product.

The Thai Industrial Hemp Trade association expects the hemp market in Thailand to grow by 25% a year, and in the next three years the market value is expected to increase to 3 trillion baht, up from 800 billion baht at present.
